WRITE | Twenties Unscripted: A Journey of Womanhood, Writing, and Relativity

“Details are what distinguish extraordinary from just mediocre.”
— Tyece Wilkins

I’m so happy to have the opportunity to tell you about “Twenties Unscripted: A Journey of Womanhood, Writing, and Relativity.” A brand new book of essays from author and blogger Tyece Wilkins. In this collection of pieces from her award-winning blog, Twenties Unscripted, Wilkins gives us her witty, raw, and humorous words in a nice, neat package.

Just a few pages in, I found myself laughing out loud. But after meeting Tyece in person for my BBB Series event in DC in July, it did not surprise me at all. I first randomly read about Tyece’s blog on some type of “Bloggers to Read” post on a site I cannot remember. Excuse the memory but this is the world of internet ADD and I probably clicked on something shiny so fast after. Immediately after checking out her blog, I connected with so many of her words, thoughts, and her passion for the importance of great writing.

Past the marketing, branding, and promotion that many blogs have become, I love that Tyece is truly a writer’s writer. There is art to the way that she puts words together. The fact that you can feel her urgency through her words is a gift. Her new book puts that energy and light of hers right between your hands.

You are alive because you move through the world with the kind of fire that so many people left on the graduation stages that they crossed.
— What I know About Life Three Years After Graduation

Her blog began as the chronicles of the post-grad life of a twenty-something and has morphed into something much greater. The fire with which Wilkins’ writes is apparent. She has the ability to showcase confidence and vulnerability side by side in many of her pieces. She is optimistic and inspirational but with a “No BS” approach. If you are looking for self-pity support, you will not find it here.

What you will find is a woman. A woman that has lived, that has been violated, that has healed, that has found solace in her passion, that is driven, ambitious and will not take no for an answer when it comes to her dreams and aspirations. Tyece’s collection of essays is refreshing in a time where our counterparts will tell us “no one reads anymore” or “no one cares.”  Could it be no one reads because there is nothing good on the menu?

Well, “Twenties Unscripted: A Journey of Womanhood, Writing and Relativity” is definitely full of nourishment. I found myself nodding profusely to many of its sentiments. Essays like “This is Your Journey, No One Else’s,” “Dreams Do Not Arrive in Neat Packages,” “So You Want to Be a Blogger?” and “The Biggest Lesson Learned About Baggage,” resonated loudly in my own world for certain.

I will show up at the door with my suitcases and duffle bags. I will know their contents. And I will not be easy to love. But, I will be loved anyway
— The Biggest Lesson Learned About Baggage

For a first book, Tyece has put together a solid body of work. With her blog as the foundation, there was no way it would be anything other than amazing. It’s observant, introspective and full of laugh out loud moments. My recommendation, take your time to digest each piece. Heck, pour yourself a glass of wine and get into her world for real for real. Tyece is offering us her life, the lessons, and the triumphs, drink it all in.
