I know that we live in a time where everyone is seemingly an expert and so many seem to just pick something that’s on trend to do and do it. Sometimes I think to myself, “Really?” However, the upside to that is that we also live in a time with a lot less gatekeepers, which can also allow people to more easily walk in purpose without the roadblocks of the past. God’s word tells us that we don’t always have to be “qualified” by the world’s standards in order to be called.
I have battled against in security in many ways in my journey. Most recently when putting together my writing workshop, The Writer’s Muse, I thought to myself “who are you to think you can teach others how to be inspired?” I am not necessarily an educator by trade, but I am a writer. I’ve been writing since I’ve known how and even though I ran from it for a long time, it’s clearly ingrained into my purpose. If you think back to the more industrial economy many people had apprenticeships and they didn’t necessarily have to be trained in teaching, but they simply had to know their craft and how to impart that on another. And that’s exactly what I did and you know what? Everyone that attended, enjoyed it!
God didn’t go out and select the top 12 of the class to follow him. The disciples had all types of issues, but it didn’t change their call. I mean even after following Jesus, Peter was slicing ears off and whatnot. But you get the point. We have to stop thinking that when we get this or when we get that all of a sudden it makes us better off to be able to serve God through our gifts and talents. Degrees, certifications, and training are great resources for sure. But ultimately what God has for you is for you even outside of all that education.
I’ve seen it at work. I have a family member who never finished college and is making six figures in a position that would normally require a Masters. I also know someone who was dyslexic and had a fear of speaking in public but has secured major positions on TV, reading and speaking to millions. You may be thinking to yourself that it’s not fair because other people may have the “credentials,” but let me tell you something about favor … it ain’t fair!
As believers, that is what we subscribe to. We are not victims to what the world will say about us. When we decide to not only believe in Christ, but to follow Him and work our faith, there is nothing that we cannot obtain according to his purpose and plan for our lives. Am I saying you don’t need education? No. Am I saying that you don’t need growth and to work at your gifts and talents? No. What I am saying is that we serve an awesome God and faith and hard work will always get you farther than just education.
People won’t understand it, sometimes family won’t understand it, friends, lovers, maybe not even you. But that my friend is the power of believing in something bigger than yourself and bigger than your credentials.
