There is something about that time when you are just scratching the surface of the love of God an His teachings. I think many believers remember vividly the moment when something connected and you wondered what you were doing all this time before your gave your life to Christ. This is the time we often call being on fire for Christ. But as you push and press, and grow, and life happens, you can begin to get a little comfortable, and a little complacent in your belief.
I am not a person who grew up in church. Well, all the time. We went to church at varying points in my life, but we were never super consistently involved or anything like that. So I still feel like such a babe in my faith. I am still in that honeymoon stage with God where I am in awe of Him and His goodness and the peace that I have developed since deciding to follow Him. And sometimes those same people that helped ignite my own fire for Christ can seem weary.
It’s not like they don’t believe. That’s not what I mean, but it can seem like a little bit of the twinkle that I once saw is gone and so I wanted to take the time out to encourage those who may feel discouraged or tired, or unsure in their walk with Christ. Here are a few things to remember in regard to re-igniting that fire that brought you here in the first place.
Stay in remembrance of His Goodness. There are times when I can feel a bit discouraged, especially financially about things. But I distinctly remember this moment with God where I was so uncertain about tithing. I said to God, “Lord, how can I tithe when I need that exact amount of money to pay a bill?” Well, when I got home that day, there was half of a security deposit check and a refund check from Comcast which we all know NEVER happens. I felt like that was God saying, I will always have your back. It made me think of the scripture that talks about not worrying about where you will sleep or eat or the clothes on your back. He will provide. (Matthew 6:31)
Remember Christ wasn’t fond of lukewarm believers. He said that he would spit the lukewarm out of His mouth. You can’t just be on cruise control in your faith. You have got to pick a side and if you are deciding to roll with Jesus, you need to be hot in the process. The enemy loves to take advantage of that gray area. Most often that’s when we are a lot more easily swayed into the temptation to go the other way. (Revelation 3:16)
Get Into the Word. I had to realize recently that though I was praying and going to church, I wasn’t spending time reading the actual Bible. I always feel really refreshed and amazed by all the answers that are right there in the text. Here this book is a zillion years old, yet the issues of the people remain the same. I can still relate to the people who lived thousands of years before me. We are still struggling with faith, adultery, lying, uncertainty, fear and all of that. All the answers you may be looking for, are right there in that book or iPhone or tablet, you know, wherever you get the word these days.
Get around other believers. Sometimes when we feel the most drained it’s because we are secluded from the very people that can lift us up. I recently thought about the fact that most often when we are going through things, we retract. It’s in our nature. It’s the first thing that Adam and Eve did when they broke the rule with the fruit. They hid. So often we do this and can’t dig ourselves out of the hole we’re in so we sink deeper and deeper. Your faith may be waning because you need to be refilled. Yes we are supposed to be light in dark places but eventually that light needs to power up to continue being able to shine.
Pray. Seems like the simplest thing right? But honestly, you are not fooling God. He knows that you are having fears and doubts so trust Him enough to cry out to Him. Let Him know that you are struggling. That life is coming at you and though you know He is the foundation, you are battling and need extra strength to overcome the strongholds in your mind. He’ll let you know what you need to do whether it’s fasting, letting go of a strenuous relationship, needing to move to a new city. Whatever it is. He wants you to be in daily conversation with Him even if the conversation is saying, Lord I am struggling with my faith.
There are seasons for everything. There will be some times when you are so full of the spirit that everyone and their mom will want to be in your presence. There will be other times when you want to crawl in a hole because you are so in the flesh. But the goal is to get to this space where you constantly are relying and trusting in God no matter what the circumstance.
Remember that no matter how long you’ve been waiting or regardless of what it looks like, God has a plan. And sometimes that will be all you know. But know that plan is blessed and whatever you’re going through at the moment won’t deter you from it. Give thanks in the times when your faith is slight and be honest about it. Think about those times when you first got to know God and His love, get in His presence and stay in remembrance of His word. That will get you back where you need to be. That’s just enough to reignite the flame.

"To everything there is a season, a time to every purpose under the heaven." Ecclesiastes 3:1
"So because you are lukewarm - neither hot nor cold - I am about to spit you out of my mouth." Revelation 3:16
"Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Matthew 6:31-33
Are you in a space where you have been believing God but things seem to be taking longer than you think? Have you lost faith that He will never leave nor forsake you? Are you in a space where you may need a bit of encouragement to get back where you need to be?
I would love to pray for you. Feel free to leave a comment below so we can come into agreement with God and help you reignite your faith!
And if you don’t mind praying for me, I have been feeling anxious about getting to the next level in my business and career. I know that God’s plan is better than anything I could conjure up, but I am looking forward to developing a more profitable business that will aid me in being able to work for myself full time.
Love you guys!
