Knowing When to Invest in Your Business

We live in an age where everyone is an expert, everyone has an opinion, and honestly it's hard as heck to know exactly which way to go at times! As an entrepreneur it can be completely nerve-wrecking trying to figure out what exactly to invest in and when. The important thing to know is that eventually you will have to invest, so it's best to make as informed of a decision in the process as possible. 

2015 has been an amazing year for me. No I am not rolling in the dough or sitting with Oprah on Soulful Sunday quite yet, but I will say that I have invested the most time and money in my business this year than I ever have! And it's paying off! 

This year has been all about building and reeling it in. As I mentioned in a previous post, I have many talents and had to realize that I truly can only focus on a couple things at once if I ever want to achieve the heights that I'm reaching for. So I did the work. I signed up for as many free things as I could. I filled out the worksheets, I did the adult homework and really began to think about what it is I want WriteLaughDream to represent, how I want it to function and what's important to most of us, how I could make some cash in the process. I revamped the site, made some logo changes, honed in on my branding and most importantly, started producing better content. As you know, I will always be a writer first! 

And I've seen the fruit of those investments. And my bank account feels every monthly subscription whether it's my website host, finally moving to a paid Mailchimp account, purchasing Adobe Photoshop and much more. Dreams cost. I have not heard of one person who didn't have to put something out to get something back and so ... We have to invest in ourselves. But where I was stuck was, it seemed I had come to the end of my road with my free content. I really wanted someone who could look at my specific situation and say, change this, do that, reverse that and blamo! But my bank account was saying something very different. Just like many of you, the bills and the rent don't really care what dreams we have. They are due every month and affording a coach is not always the easiest thing to do. Especially when you are trying to figure out how to monetize what you do. 

So, I continued to follow awesome people like Mattie of Mattieologie, Maya Elious of mayaelious.com, Melyssa Griffin of The Nectar Collective and the list really goes on. So much so that for my sanity I have actually started unsubscribing to some things. But the bottom line is, you work with what you got until you can get what you need. And then came Black Friday! Bling. 

For some time I was really debating between trying to work with Maya Elious or Mattie James. They're sisters by the way which makes it kind of funny. Either way, Maya put together a ridiculously useful bundle for $67 about branding and business etc. It was like the heavens had opened up just for me and I knew I needed to take advantage. Especially because I like that she gives very concise actionable steps that have helped make a difference in her free content. So I knew that it would be great if you actually paid a couple of dollars. Not nearly what it's worth of course, but nonetheless. 

I'm waiting for my holiday break to really jump into the content. But I know that there will be a lot of useful pieces for me to incorporate. Sometimes it can seem like we are so far ahead, but at every step there is someone who knows more than you and that's okay. I'm very comfortable with what I have to offer. So you don't have to be afraid to get help just because you think you have gotten to a certain point. As a very independent self-taught everything type of person, I had to be honest enough with myself to say, I definitely have to get someone to help me execute at the next level.

And so no $67 isn't the biggest investment. But for me it was a big step because I kept teetering back and forth about whether I actually needed someone's help and instruction or not. And the answer is yes! We'll continually be learning and improving ourselves and so that will cost you at times. In every Dreamer Session that I have conducted so far, it's not that I am giving my clients things they could never figure out on their own. I am saving them the time it would take and giving them an objective viewpoint to help them get to where they want to be in their writing journey. Sometimes that's all you need and people's time, thoughts and instruction are worth the money when you find the right person!

So how do you find the right person? Take your time!!! You do not have to rush and purchase something just because there is a deal this week. At the end of the day, they are in sales and guess what? There will be another deal. Lol. So do what you can with what they offer for free. And if it is helping you, I guarantee that eventually you will want to purchase something from them. But the key is finding the right fit for you and paying attention to whether they actually have something to offer. There are a lot of people out here offering services and they are not as knowledgeable about the subject as you would think! 

My issue was never investing in software or promo materials or any of that stuff. But I was apprehensive about investing in people. Especially when the market is so crowded. But I'm really looking forward to diving in. Here is a list of a couple things below that I have purchased to help with my personal and business development within the last few months. 

  • An Accountant! I feel so much better about my life with this one! 
  • Registered my LLC to operate more like a business and open a business bank account.
  • Purchased a mailbox rental for professional purposes.
  • Adode Photoshop for more tools than free services.
  • Mailchimp monthly subscription to begin utilizing automation.
  • Moved my site to Squarespace for better commerce options and to improve look and feel of the site.
  • Attending the Brown Girls Building Brands Brunch in Philadelphia featuring Myleik Teele
  • Purchased the This is My Year Journal
  • Purchased the Branding Bundle from Maya Elious
  • Purchased the Epic Blog Planner from Regina Anaejionu
