DREAM | Learning to Reel It In

Many of us are sooo multi-talented and that’s great. God has blessed us with multiple gifts, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that we have to use all of them, at once, all the time.
Learning to reel it in

Over the past few months, I have spent a lot of time refining and working on WriteLaughDream the website and the business. I hope you like by the way! This year really helped me recognize that my site was a bit all over the place. And as much encouragement as I receive from you guys, I never want you be confused about what you’re getting when you head to WriteLaughDream.com! So I wanted to talk a little bit about the process of REELING IT ALL THE WAY IN and its importance.

You have probably heard people talk forever about finding your niche and most of us are thinking, what in the world does that even really mean? Well it’s pretty much just honing in on the things that you enjoy and that you are well versed enough in to talk about over and over again in various different ways. Many of us are sooo multi-talented and that’s great. God has blessed us with multiple gifts, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that we have to use all of them, at once, all the time. Ha! And that was me! I am into so many things and I was trying to make all of those things come together in this one place and that’s just not beneficial. Ever heard the saying “Jack of all trades, master of none?”

It’s not good enough to hide behind the vague description of yourself as a lifestyle blogger to accommodate for you writing about everything under the sun. People want to go to you for a specific thing. Think of magazines. There are Home and Garden mags, Fashion mags, entertainment mags, and more and they tend to stick to their lane. They talk about the things that they know their readers need. And don’t get me wrong, some people have personal blogs. That is its own niche. So though they write about various experiences, they are not all of sudden going to be doing fashion round ups or that sort of thing. So I spent some important time thinking about what that really meant for WriteLaughDream. And what did I come up with?

Well, I am a person that is SUPER dedicated to growth! I never want to look up and feel like I am the same person I was a year ago. I constantly want to learn and grow and work to become the most refined version of who God has called me to be on this Earth. And so that’s pretty much the tone that the blog has taken. I had no idea this was an inspirational blog until I was listed as such in a roundup of bloggers. Ha! But yes, by nature I am an encourager, and so I have found that voice in my writing even while sharing about my own experiences.

So this blog is not just about me writing whatever it is I feel that day. It’s about sharing those experiences to also encourage you. I am a writer by trade. That’s who I am. And so this blog will always be about writing, telling a story and giving you some things to try and think about in your own growth. My writing here encourages growth in life, love, and dreaming in color. That means I want you to grow as a person, as a lover, and as someone working to achieve their dreams. In the midst of that, I also host events that have that same purpose. Events that create community and that provide space for people to share their experiences safely and in a positive environment.

Over the past few months, I also realized that I wanted to encourage other writers. SO many people have books and blogs in them that will never see the light of day. And I want to do my part to help make sure that doesn’t happen to you. And so, I have added posts about writing, hosted in person writing workshops and I am currently developing The Writer, The Brand e-course.

It has taken months! Months to wrap my head around exactly what it is that I do here. And I am so glad that you have been here with me through the process. And I want to get you on this reeling it in journey along with me. God willing, we have a lot of life left to live. And so I just had to learn that some of the things that I want to do just won’t happen right this second. I love making cards and stationary. I eventually want to write for film or TV. I have lots of other interests. But right this second, these things that I mentioned in the paragraphs above deserve my full attention. No matter how many screens we can utilize at once in today’s society, excessive multi-tasking will never get you where you want to be. You have to prioritize if you want any of those things to be successful.

So in the moments of insanity where I think I want to develop a nude lipstick for black women, I remind myself what it is that I am in the process of doing. Lol. I am a writer, I create blog content, give events, write books and help other writers. Nowhere in there is anything regarding cosmetology. And so if God sees it fit for me to do that at some point later in life then great. But right now in this season, writing, events, and helping other writers is my main focus. That’s it!

Each year I make a theme for the year and this year’s theme was focus and running my own race. Though there may only be 40 some odd days left in this year, I think I am finally getting it. Finally getting the importance on focusing on just a couple things instead of every thought I’ve ever had in life.

Try it. I promise it will be so settling and you will immediately feel a lot less overwhelmed.

Heart Check:

  • If you had to narrow your career goals to just a couple things, what would they be right now?
  • What can you put on the back burner for a later date?
  • How can you prioritize a little better?
